I began my writing career as a poet and continue to write poetry. "In Country," which first appeared in the literary magazine Rhino, received an Illinois Arts Council Award in 2002.

Daughter Suite
Landscape Toward a Proper Silence
"Daughter Suite" remains to this day one of my favorite poems. The poem appears in my book of poems, Landscape Toward a Proper Silence (Eye of the Comet Press), which Lisel Mueller described as a "splendid collection. . . . giving us associative imagery as deeply and sharply focused as the detail we sometimes find in the best painting and photography."

Still Life
Seeding the Snow, Fall–Winter 2000
"Still Life" was published in Seeding the Snow, a journal of women's writing and artwork that celebrates the Midwestern landscape. The inspiration for the essay came from a class I teach entitled, Writing Nature's Way.
